Do we really help the poor people by giving them money on the streets? (Discussion)

I feel this act of ours merely discourages them to do work when they can get money without doing any work. But if the person is a handicapped or too old to do work, then for sure we are helping him.

Yes, giving money to those who are capable of doing physical work to earn for themselves, would, in fact, amount to incapacitating them mentally, and hence, can not be considered as a wise or kind act at all!

Unless they truly are needy. Who are we to know? Shouldn’t we just have faith that we are doing the right thing and go from there?

I agree partially to the point put across above. Now lets give it a sincere thought! Would you ever give a job to a shabby looking stranger? At least if he/she is neat and tidy, then you MIGHT like to talk to him about his or her capabilities! I have come across many who say that they discourage the needy to work by giving them money. I asked them if they ever bothered to get them a job or assign a small task themselves. The answer to this was a puzzled look with a pin-drop silence… But it explained all!
There are those who have been rejected and hurt to an extent that they do not have the strength to stand for themselves and utilize there talents/capabilities ‘if any’! For them to come up to a level that they can look beyond this, they need things like food, encouragement, wise friends, education, AN OPPORTUNITY and of course money also.
But money is certainly not all that we can, or should provide them.

    Regards,
    Bonny

Bonny, you raised a very good point. Yes, providing them food, persuading them to do work and helping them in getting a job can change their lives to a great extent. Also, letting them know about the nearest NGO where they can visit will help.

After working with homeless here in the U.S. for a number of years, I never give money to people on the street. People who beg are usually not the ones in real need. They are the ones who need something for their bad habits or their pockets. I also find that some of those begging are not even poor or in need. They are just collecting money for their pockets that is tax free. Do remember that the largest number of poor in the U.S. are children.

The program I worked in provided education, job training, clothing, inexpensive housing, medical, dental, food, etc. and was made up of most of the reputable charitable organizations, public schools, and the county. Most of the money came from grants or donations to the different organizations.

Some of the people who went through this program are now productive members of society. They have jobs, housing and the belongings they need to live.

If you are going to give money, I believe it should be given to organizations that actual enable the poor. I also do not give money to people who collect money for organizations to help the poor at food stores. Real organizations have many ways of collecting money and I have never seen any of the organizations I worked with begging for money at a store, accept the famous one ‘Salvation Army’ at Christmas. I do not believe that you incapacitating poor mentally when you give them money on the street but you enable them to feed their bad habits and fatten their pockets without paying taxes, which does not encourage them to be productive members of society.
